My mom, maiden name Elizabeth Raine Gee, and me circa 1976.
When I was about 12 years old, my mom gave me a copy of Charles Anderson Raine’s autobiography. As a kid who devoured history, I was fascinated to read about my ancestor’s life, especially his service in the Civil War.
About 15 years ago, while working at the Library of Virginia, I became much more interested in other parts of C.A. Raine’s life, especially his life as a businessman. He gave short shrift to that part of his story because he wrote the autobiography for his children; the story of C.A. Raine and Co. was one they already knew. That story leaves many holes to be filled in.
Also, I loved Syd Dickenson’s genealogy website, looking at the photographs there and reading more about the Raine family. Sadly, I never met Syd, and missed an opportunity to meet a person I felt was a kindred spirit and learn more about the family. I will turn 50 this summer; time is moving quickly; it’s a good time for me to share with others what little I have learned. If any Raine descendants have information to share or corrections to make, I hope they will in the comments or by email.
